Okay, so not long ago I announced TWO NEW SHORT STORY COLLECTIONS in the works. They will be coming out from my new publishing imprint Eibon Press and will be hard-hitting, mind-blowing shit. The original plan was to release the first one, HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT? by the end of the year. That plan has changed. The first book in the series is actually called IT’S JUST US, and will be released on November 12, which is my birthday.
There are many reasons for this switcharoo (not that anyone is really paying attention), but my time is limited these days so I’ll have to be somewhat brief in my explanation. See, I’ve been writing short stories like a madman for the past ten years or so, ever since the publication of my first collection THE RIOT ACT. With very few exceptions, I never publish these stories in magazines or on blogs. (Unless I get a really insanely kind offer, or it appears here as an Express exclusive.) It’s a quirk of mine. The shorts are my babies. I have a hard time letting go of them. What this means is that I’ve amassed a SHITLOAD of short stories and they really want to be read. Organizing the past ten years into just two volumes has been a complicated and aredous task. I realized as I was editing HOW BAD? that certain artistic ebb and flows were pulling me to certain shores, and by the time the smoke cleared, I had actually removed the story that would have been its original namesake. Plus, I’d added a lot more stuff that changed the overall intent of the collection. So I opted to use the title of the second collection as the first. (Confused yet? Well, don’t worry. It’s confusing.) The title IT’S JUST US absolutely sums up the statement I want to make with this book, and I think it fits like a glove. So HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT? will be the title of the next collection, out next year. Believe me, it will be worth the wait. That one will contain much longer, novella-lenegth work. The current collection offers shorter, more stabbing stories, some of which date as far back as 2006, when I was living in a shotgun shack in another part of the world. Others are very recent. Bookending the collection are two very long, very dark works. For example, Rose .45 will finally come on stage in IT’S JUST US. Most of the previously announced stores that were to appear in HOW BAD? will be in this one as well.
I am also pleased to announce that the amazing miss Ashley Laurence, my good friend and star of the HALLRAISER films, has done the cover art for this one, and she’s also honored me by penning the introduction. I am pleased as punch that she’s come on to this. It’s our first collaboration since we worked together in 2007 on SHOCK FESTIVAL.
When the book goes on sale, it will be an Eibon Exclusive, available only though Amazon. That’s where my “edgier” fiction will reside for the foreseeable future. There will also be a proper edition of my “lost” novel SAFE IN THE WOODS, and a few other surprises.
Meanwhile, brace yourself. IT’S JUST US is a bruiser. Just sayin.’
